AAC and Literacy: Supporting Emergent Literacy Learners


In this course, you will learn that it’s never too early to start working on reading and writing skills for our AAC communicators, even if they are not yet using their AAC system independently. This course will provide a helpful starting point for supporting emergent literacy skill development while providing an overview of a comprehensive literacy plan and resources for getting started. 

You will learn how to:

Describe the learning paradigm between language and literacy development.

List three components of a comprehensive literacy program for emergent learners.

State two benefits of shared reading for AAC users.

Ali Pettigrew is a Learning Consultant and loves supporting AAC users, communication partners, professionals, and those with an interest in AAC. Ali’s professional career has allowed her to facilitate individualized student learning in a variety of settings, ranging from classrooms to summer camps, with a specialty for cultivating successful learning and communication strategies for students with brain injury and autism diagnoses.
